چکیده

We propose a tensor description of surface anchoring of liquid crystals (LCs). The model allows one to consider both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous parts of LC anchoring and to calculate the cumulative effect of different treatments as a sum of corresponding tensors. For the planar alignment the tensor representation is reduced to the complex azimuthal anchoring coefficient, whose amplitude and phase determine, respectively, the strength of azimuthal anchoring and the azimuthal angle of the easy axis. We predict and experimentally confirm that two consecutive photoalignment treatments with beams of perpendicular polarizations can compensate each other and restore the initial anchoring.

A Vector Grouping Algorithm for Liquid Crystal Tensor Field Visualization

Tensor elds are at the heart of many science and engineering disciplines. Many tensor visualization methods separate the tensor into component eigenvectors and visualize those instead. Eigenvectors are normally ordered according to their eigenvalues: the eigenvectors corresponding to the smallest, median, or largest eigenvalues are in their corresponding groups. We showed that this ordering str...

Some properties of the nematic radial hedgehog in Landau-de Gennes' theory

In the Landau-de Gennes theoretical framework of a Q-tensor description of nematic liquid crystals, we consider a radial hedgehog defect with strong anchoring conditions in a ball B ⊂ R. We show that the scalar order parameter is monotonic, and we prove uniqueness of the minimizing hedgehog below the spinodal temperature T ∗.

Monte Carlo simulations of liquid crystals near rough walls.

The effect of surface roughness on the structure of liquid crystalline fluids near solid substrates is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The liquid crystal is modeled as a fluid of soft ellipsoidal molecules and the substrate is modeled as a hard wall that excludes the centers of mass of the fluid molecules. Surface roughness is introduced by embedding a number of molecules with random positi...

Structures and Structural Phase Transitions in Confined Liquid Crystal Systems

Discussed are two numerical packages for computing equilibrium structures of liquid crystals. The first uses Frank elasticity in a rectangular geometry in two spatial dimensions. The second uses a tensor order parameter and Landau-deGennes free energy in the geometry of a finite circular cylinder. The Frank code is being used to study the phenomenon of the “stripe phase” in thin nematic films i...

Bulk and surface biaxiality in nematic liquid crystals.

Nematic liquid crystals possess three different phases: isotropic, uniaxial, and biaxial. The ground state of most nematics is either isotropic or uniaxial, depending on the external temperature. Nevertheless, biaxial domains have been frequently identified, especially close to defects or external surfaces. In this paper we show that any spatially varying director pattern may be a source of bia...
